The Annunciation. The moment when "The Angel of the Lord declared unto Mary, and she conceived of the Holy Spirit." "Behold the handmaid of the Lord. Be it done unto me according to Thy word." These lines from the Gospel of Luke, also included in the traditional Catholic prayer "The Angelus," are the groundwork upon which this piece was built.
This piece is chock full of beautiful symbolism. Mary is grounded, the colors of the earth and mountains. Gabriel and the Dove are the colors of the breaking dawn, of the heavens. One of my favorites: the outline of the rising sun is placed where Mary's belly will be as the birth of our Savior approaches - the glory of the Lord shines around her, lighting the world and chasing the shadows away.
